The Royal Institution of Great Britain

The Royal Institution (RI) is an independent organisation, free from any private or public sector agendas. The RI’s vision is to celebrate science in all its aspects, not just cutting edge research, but also its application to politics, education and most important of all, the needs of the general public.

The RI has always provided open public debate and education about science and scientific issues for people for all ages through its year-round, high-calibre events that break down the barriers between science and society. The Public and Young People’s Event programmes of the RI deliver independent science-based discussion on an issue where society’s interest lies. This has included such varied topics as climate change, cutting edge discovery in combating serious illness such as Leukaemia and Alzheimer’s and the Culinary Alchemist given by Heston Blumenthal.

Since its establishment in 1799, 14 scientists closely connected with the RI have won the Nobel Prize. Ten chemical elements of the Periodic Table have been found by those who have worked in the building. Famous figures such as Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, James Dewar and William and Lawrence Bragg have researched, lectured and lived in the RI. Amongst their innovative and ground-breaking discoveries made at the RI, and which still impact on our daily lives, are the electric generator, the miner’s safety lamp and the atomic structure of crystals.

In May 2008 the RI’s building re-opened following an extensive refurbishment designed by Sir Terry Farrell. In the most complete reimagining of its iconic spaces, the RI now features three floors of museum space, elegant Georgian rooms and a cafe, bar and restaurant.

Liverpool Biennial

Liverpool Biennial is best known as the promoter and organiser of the UK's international festival of the contemporary art every second year. But we also have an ongoing role commissioning art for the public realm, such as Richard Wilson's Turning the Place Over and Antony Gormley's Place at Crosby Beach, and delivering our educational objectives through a programme of activities in partnership.

Established in 1998, Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art Ltd has presented four festivals, in 1999, 2002, 2004 & 2006. Plans are now being laid for the Liverpool Biennial 2008 (20 September- 30 November).

The 'mission' through all our activities is 'engaging art, people and place'. We do this by commissioning artworks and other programme collaboratively, in partnership with other organisations wherever possible. For instance, we do not have our own building for exhibition or education purposes because we work with other organisations that do have buildings, and we can get closer to Liverpools communities by working in this way. Our projects typically involve local and international artists working with non-art organisations, and find support from a range of local authorities and regeneration agencies in the city region. We consider the relationships built through these projects to be an important aspect of the quality of the artwork produced.
